DXCC In A Weekend

What contest allows you to work DXCC in one weekend? The ARRL International DX SSB contest! This weekend I participated in the annual event. It was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it. Seldom do I have an opportunity to sit for very long at the radio. I operate for an hour … then… More »

DX Operating and Upcoming Hamfest

I had a good time a couple weekends ago working the ARRL DX CW Contest. Made a bit over 200 QSOs, while just taking it leisurely. This past weekend, I worked a few new countries that I am pleased with…and on several bands and modes.  I worked the Solomon Islands, Burkina Faso and Burundi; all new for… More »

ARRL DX CW Contest

I participated in the ARRL DX CW Contest this past weekend.  I didn’t fervently work the contest, but I sat down a couple of times and worked several stations.  Conditions were not the best…but also not the worst…that that I’ve seen.  I didn’t pick up any new DXCC entities…but did work a few that I have… More »

God Made Ham Radio Operators

Here’s a little item I scratched out after hearing the “God Made A Farmer” Super Bowl commercial. With apologies to Paul Harvey. God said I need somebody to get up before dawn and work the gray line propagation for faraway DX. Someone to turn on the HF radio, eat dinner by the glow of the… More »

2013 Midwest ARRL Convention Update

A group of hams from my hometown, including my stepfather KØDEW, are putting together the ARRL Midwest Convention this year.  Click here for the ARRL Midwest Convention website. It will be held in November 2013 in Lebanon, Missouri.  They have a fantastic slate of guest speakers lined up which will appeal to those interested in many aspects… More »

NAQP and LOTW

Spent just over 3 hours yesterday working the North American QSO Party contest (SSB) and worked just over 400 stations.  That’s a pretty high QSO rate.  I am thinking next year I need to really make an all out effort on this one and work the entire 12 hours contest. This year, as I am still recovering from… More »

Triple Play Award, Space Station and HF Amplifiers

Today, I applied for the Triple Play Award.  I worked Wyoming on JT65 mode for my final needed state…and he confirmed the following day.  Several of my QSO confirmations were tied up in the recent LoTW snarl.  When they came “out”…it was like winning at the slots. There used to be a listing (with serial… More »

iPhone and Ham Radio

Over the holidays, I upgraded from the iPhone 3GS to the iPhone 4S.  It’s got quite a bit more horsepower, capability and…Siri.  In case you don’t know, Siri is a “personal assistant” that will carry out commands via your voice.  For example, if I want to send a text message to my son, I can… More »

Mapping Trusted QSL and LOTW

I recently had a strange occurrence with my JT-65 software, logging and Logbook of the World uploads.  After much head scratching, I figured out TWO solutions. Here’s what I discovered; maybe someone else is having the same issue. I am active on JT-65 mode, trying to work and confirm remaining states on digi-mode for ARRL’s Triple Play Award.  I use JT65-HF software and installed… More »
